About the Coton de Tulear
The Coton de Tulear is the national dog of Madagascar. The name Coton means ‘cotton’ in French, which describes the dogs’ white, soft, fluffy coats, and Tulear is a city on the west coast of Madagascar.
Appearance & Features
This small, sturdy dog typically weighs eight to eighteen pounds. They are hypoallergenic with little or no shedding, and coloration varies from all-white to tricolor, including white, tan, and black. There are also black and white Cotons, but these are rare. Tri-coloration typically fades as the dog matures and may even entirely disappear. Routine grooming is essential to maintain the coat.
The dogs are very friendly and playful and make both great companions and family pets. The Coton is not a hunting dog and best kept indoors with daily walks and outdoor playtime.
History
Traveling first from Madagascar to Europe, the Coton de Tulear is a relatively new breed in the USA, first introduced in the 1970s. The Coton became an American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized breed in 2014. Similar breeds/cousins include the Bichon Frise, Havanese, and Maltese.
Mikala’s Cotons takes great pride in offering purebred dogs with champion bloodlines.
